R E M O D E L

The Cho's wanted their basement finished with a layout to suit the needs of their growing family. The remodel was to cover everything literally from floor to ceiling, with the walls in­between. The first phase of this process was a series of in­depth consultations covering the wide variety of options available to them. Lighting was an important consideration for the Cho family, so particular attention was paid to illumination in the various plans. After going over several different proposed layouts, the family decided on one that worked for all of them and the initial ordering of materials was begun.

Challenge

Each member of the family had his or her own ideas of how the basement space should be divided. Mr. and Mrs. Cho needed an office, their son wanted a play area, and the whole family was looking forward to a gym and a comfortable entertainment space.

The other barrier to this basement remodel was the darkness of the space. There was little natural light and almost no electric lighting. It was important to the family to have a light, bright, finished basement.

Solution

The consultant went over plenty of different floor plans with the Chos and everyone discussed the pros and cons of each. By listening carefully to what the clients were looking for, MSC was able to come up with options, which made it easier for the family to come to their final decision.

Once the layout and major design features were agreed upon, we started work on construction. We created a separate space for the office, play area, gym, and entertainment area. Each had it’s own look and feel and the right kind of lighting. Many of the areas were lit with recessed lights to give the entire basement an all around brighter feel.

Conclusion

The Cho's basement was transformed into a space where the family could all be together while enjoying activities of their own choosing. The son could be in the playroom, while Mr. and Mrs. Cho were either working in their office, working out in the gym, or chatting with guests in the entertainment area.

The recessed lighting gave each part of the basement that extra brightness, and everyone who visits comments on how bright and inviting the room is now.
